Offering a theme-based program created to help your child develop their cognitive, language and social skills while exploring art, music, math, science and the world they live in.

Some of our adventures: Monthly field trips, intergenerational program with Westview Acres (Monday, Wednesday, Friday classes only), show and tell, VIP days, celebrations and more! Our preschool program is designed to inspire and encourage your child!

The cost is $95 per month for two days and $130 per month for three days. There is also a one time registration fee of $25 and an activity fee of $85 for the year.

Brown Bag Bears is a program available at Waconia Nursery School during the school year. Students will have the opportunity to extend their school day by one hour on Tuesdays (for Tuesday/Thursday classes) and Wednesdays (for Monday, Wednesday, Friday classes). During this additional class time, students will have lunch with their teachers and fellow classmates. After lunch the students will participate in large motor activities.

This session is available on a first come first serve basis and a sign up sheet will be posted outside the classroom. 20 students will be allowed to attend each session.

The cost for this session is $5 per day and you must use the "Brown Bag Bear" punch cards which will be available for purchase throughout the year. 5 punches can be bought for $25 or 10 punches can be bought for $50.

 

Thursday | 12:15pm - 2:15pm

2 hour long sessions. Expanded programming on Thursday afternoons for 2010 - 2011.

Creative and fun classes for your 3 year old. This is a great opportunity for those who miss the cut-off age for preschool (you only need to be 3 at the start of the session you sign up for) or for the child who is not ready for a two day program. Also a great choice for your 3 year old who wants to do something in addition to preschool!

This class offers a creative theme-based curriculum that will be offered and will allow your child to use his/her imagination while strengthening his/her independence. Parents will NOT stay for this class. Your child will flourish with this small group of three-year-olds in the quaint environment available at Waconia Nursery School. Children are encouraged to be potty-trained. At a minimum, they should be able to wear pull-ups to class.

Just for 3's 2010 - 2011 Schedule:
Four 7-week sessions:
Session 1. September 30th - November 18th
Session 2. December 2nd - January 27th
Session 3. February 3rd - March 24th
Session 4. March 31st - May 12th

The class will have a maximum of 12 children.

This class is focused on the child gearing up for kindergarten in 2010 - 2011.  The class will focus on Kindergarten Expectations” such as name writing in upper and lowercase letters, number and letter recognition, rhyming concepts and pre-reading skills.

Kindergarten Enrichmment 2010 - 2011 Schedule:
May 17th, 19th, 24th, and 26th

Here is an example of how a typical day may be spent:

9:00am - 9:15am | 12:15pm - 12:30pm               
Choice Time:  Children arrive and choose different activities that are available in the different learning centers. These would include a science area, quiet area with books and tapes, easel and self-directed art, small manipulatives area, and puzzles.

9:15am - 9:30am | 12:30pm - 12:45pm    
Short Group: Children are gathered for a brief time. The teacher shares information about the activities available for that day. This time is also used for VIP day, show and tell, and recognition of a child's birthday.

9:30am - 10:10am | 12:45pm - 1:25pm              
Choice Time: Children are now free to choose from choices above, as well as computer, daily art project, sensory table, block area, dramatic play and large muscle area.

10:10am - 10:20am | 1:25pm - 1:35pm
Language Time: Children are taken to a different room for a planned group experience which may include: a guest, storybook, dramatization by the teacher, flannel board story, role playing, creative movement, music or a field trip. It most always includes singing.

10:20am - 11:00am | 1:35pm - 2:15pm 
Choice Time: Children are now free to choose from choices above, as well as computer, daily art project, sensory table, block area, dramatic play and large muscle area.

11:00am - 11:25am | 2:15pm - 2:40pm
Creative Movement Time: Children may go outdoors for a walk to City Square Park or play organized games. Indoors, the children may play group games, use the parachute or move to music.

11:25am - 11:30am | 2:40pm - 2:45pm
Singing and Closing Time: Children end the day with a song and farewell words from the teacher.

 

The schedule and it's times are flexible depending on the needs of the children and the variety of activities being offered. The program is planned so that it is developmentally appropriate for the age level of students it serves. The program is also a positive atmosphere exists among the staff to help promote a positive self concept in each child.

The following is a more detailed explanation of the whats? and “whys?” of the program:

  1. Choice Time:  During this time the children are encouraged to choose an activity to do on their own or with a friend. This promotes responsibility, decision- making, independence and social skills.
    • Science Area: Children are encouraged to be aware of and have concern for their natural environment. Scientific thinking is emphasized through classification, observation, recording, predicting, questioning, describing, comparing and generalizing.
    • Reading Area: Children are given the opportunity to explore the world of books. This promotes pre-reading skills and the love of reading.
    • Art Area: The children are encouraged to use their own creativity while using different art mediums. This promotes small motor skills, math concepts and other readiness skills.
    • Snack Area: At times, children are involved in the preparation of the snack.  The children eat a nutritious snack and have an opportunity for socializing.
    • Sensory Area: A table is provided for the children to explore different substances from nature, such as: water, corn, sand, snow, etc.
    • Small Manipulatives Area: Some of the activities offered might include sequencing, visual discrimination, categorizing and matching tasks.
    • Block Area: Children are given the opportunity to increase coordination, balance and control through the use of small and large building blocks.
    • Dramatic Play Area: A variety of dramatic situations are provided for the child, such as:  homemaking, pizza parlor, ice cream shop, bank, grocery store, hospital, flower shop, etc. These types of activities encourage cooperation with peers.
  1. Language Time: During this time the children are in a large group situation. This promotes attending skills and self control.  The children are introduced to a theme for the day/week. This creates an enthusiasm for learning and knowledge of their world and other people and cultures.
  1. Creative Movement Time: Promotes the use of large motor skills and cooperation with peers through organized games, use of playground equipment and walks.
  1. Singing and Closing Time: During this time, the children are exposed to language and the art of music.

This program plan is developed and evaluated annually by our teachers and is available to parents for review on request. The themes and activities are on a two-year cycle. The curriculum is planned this way so that children enrolled for two years will have the opportunity for a wider variety of ideas and activities.
